God Must Come First

What is most important to you? Your job, or your family, or be with your friends, or spending time with God. Think about it for a while.

Once a friend told me, God is first in his life, and then his wife, and then his kids, his job, family and then his friends. God needs to come first, or sooner or later you will fall apart.   In Luke 10: 27 He (Jesus) answered, “‘Love the Lord, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

In my life, not realizing, I did not put God first. In my prayer time, sometimes I did not give the time to God. Sometimes my mind would wonder off to something else. When I am listening to the Rosary on my I Pad I find I need to refocus myself. At mass I find myself I am looking around. That is not putting God first in my life.

In Exodus 20: 3 the first commandment is “You shall have no other gods before me.” That means not money, sex, watching too much t.v. or what we are doing in our down time. The list goes on and on. God wants to be a part of our whole lives; not someone is sitting on the sideline. If we need help we can call on him.

In my life I wanted always to get off A I S H (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped) and support myself. Maybe buy a house and have a family. That was always my dream. I never thought I was disabled but I thought I was only a guy needed some help.

After I was Finished College I could not get a job so I went into a business with a friend and another guy I did not know. It was the wrong thing for me to do.  Not because the business did not work out, but because of the environment was really bad; like how we were joking around and I took part in it. I was the only Christian but I acted like I was not a Christian. I did not put God First in my life and my faith was slowly dying.

Yes I went to church on Sunday and a few times a week in the evenings. I prayed for my will, not for the will of God for me. But God was still calling me back to Him.

On Saturday mornings I went to a men’s prayer meeting from the Cursillo. We talked how our week went. We prayed for our needs and the needs for other people. Also we prayed for our week that was coming up. That group of men kept me on track. One of the guys really helped me. He picked me up every week. He put on my socks and shoes. We talked while we were driving to church about how my week went.

My friend was asked to be the rector for the men’s Cursillo that spring. In December the business shut the doors.  I got really down. I had dental surgery that week and I asked God do not let me wake up from my surgery.

I woke up and I have to face my mistakes. God wanted me to live. My friend asked me to do a talk for the mens Cursillo on piety. He heard me to given a talk with a Touch Talker, a communication device. I was excited, because I always wanted to give a talk on a Cursillo weekend.  He gave me a guide to read and follow. I read it and follow the guide step by step.  Then I typed something.

Writing that talk was very hard for me, not because I was poor at writing. but because the last three years it took me down to my  knees. I never wrote any Christian poems or wrote what I was feeling. I had to think back before I went into the business. I prayed a lot and tried put my problems out of my mind. Some days I wanted to call my friend to tell him I could not do it but I kept on writing. The next six weeks I worked on it. I was putting God first God is good.

Now I think God was guiding  me as I typed. Sometime I deleted a page or two because I knew I went off track. Writing the talk helped  me grow close to God once again.

Jesus, help me to do the Father’s will.

In Luke 10: 27 He (Jesus) answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

God Bless
